The NIST Standards in Trade Program: A Review of the Current Program and Analysis of Alternative Approaches

Abstract

For several years, NIST has operated a Standards in Trade Program to assist U.S. businesses to overcome technical barriers to trade in foreign markets. NIST has placed NIST Standards Representatives in Brussels for the European Union, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro for America, Riyadh for the Middle East, and Delhi for South Asia. This program is supplemented with workshops for trade and standards officials from many developing markets. This program is very successful, but Congress has suggested that it not be expanded at this time. This report analyzes the structure, operation, and success of the Standards in Trade Program.
