Abstract
Over the past few years, there has been increased attention paid by ceramic manufacturers in the United States to environmental issues facing their businesses. In a recent survey of its members, the environment was identified as the primary issue facing the ceramics industry in the next five years. Specific environmental issues include compliance, regulations, costs of regulations, emissions requirements, and the Clean Air Act. In adopting its strategic plan in 1998, the American Ceramic Society took on a more proactive role in representing these and other issues. A new committee of the Society, the Legislative and Public Affairs Committee (LPAC) was created, with the primary tasks of educating regulatory agencies, e.g. EPA, NIOSH, on technical issues that could impact AcerS members. As the AcerS 1st Trade Show and conference held last November in Monterrey, Mexico, I was invited to provide my thoughts on environmental topics that are of paramount concern to the ceramic industry. This paper is a synopis of that presentation.
