The 2025 SURF Charleston program intends to host one or two SURF participants at the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC, for the research opportunity posted below. All projects depend upon availability of funds.

646-1 Suspect and Non-target Screening for Chemicals of Emerging Concern in Biological Materials

Chemicals of emerging concern include a wide variety of compounds that might pose a threat to environmental and human health such as plastic additives, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), pesticides, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals. The goal of this research project is to conduct suspect and non-target screening in biological materials of interest, with the aim of providing practical experience in environmental analytical chemistry.
