Design Fires - Vehicles on Pine Straw Bed

Research Overview

A series of experiments are reported on the burning behavior of vehicles in a wildland-urban interface (WUI) type fire scenario. The measurements were conducted in the open under quasi-quiescent conditions under the 20 MW calorimeter at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The global measurements reported include the transient, peak, and total heat release rates, as well as the yields of hydrogen cyanide (HCN), carbon monoxide (CO), and other species. The fire appearance was captured by video cameras from various perspectives. Measurements of the near- and far-field heat flux to the surroundings are used to estimate the radiative fraction of the fires. The measurements characterize the global combustion properties of the vehicles and offer insight into their burning behavior.
