NIST WUI FIRE DAYS
NIST WUI Fire Days are a seminar series and workshop hosted by the WUI Fire research group. The event is an opportunity for collaborators and interested parties to learn about the latest WUI fire research at NIST. The diverse audience includes federal, state, and local government agencies, the fire service, non-governmental and professional organizations, researchers, and academic partners.
WUI Fire Days began in the early 2010’s as an in-person workshop of researchers at NIST and academic partners conducting research funded by NIST grants.
Starting in 2022, WUI Fire Days was expanded into an online broadcast seminar series to directly reach a wider audience. Archived recordings and presentations can be found below.
NIST WUI FIRE DAYS 2023
The 2023 WUI Fire Days seminar series took place through the month of November 2023.
The first two days presented the most recent results of the ongoing case study of the 2018 Camp Fire pertaining to the life safety aspects of the incident. These finding are reported in NIST Technical Note 2252 detailing the topics of notification, evacuation, traffic, temporary refuge areas, rescues, and fatalities (abbreviated as NETTRA). These topics were presented in four modules.
Lessons from the Camp Fire can be applied and incorporated by other communities, as presented in NIST Technical Note 2262, titled “WUI Fire Evacuation and Sheltering Considerations—Assessment, Planning, and Execution.” A presentation of the concepts in that report were presented on Day 2, November 8, 2023.
The third day included presentations of recent experimental work on parcel-level fire spread hazards from small residential storage sheds (NIST Technical Note 2253) and firewood piles (NIST Technical Note 2251). A walkthrough of a new NIST webpage detailing the Hazard Mitigation Methodology was also presented.

NIST WUI FIRE DAYS 2022
The NIST WUI Fire Group hosted their most recent WUI Fire Days through the month of July 2022. The event was virtual for the first time and occurred over four consecutive Wednesdays. The event provided NIST the opportunity to share current research with a large, diverse audience dedicated to protecting people and structures from WUI fires.
This year, in addition to work by NIST researchers, participants from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) and the US Forest Service presented aspects of ongoing collaborative work on the Structure Separation Experiments (SSE).
The fourth session included presentations from the four active WUI fire-related research projects being conducted by academic partners funded through NIST’s Fire Research Grants Program.
