Standard Reference Material 2100: Ceramic Fracture Toughness

Abstract
A new Standard Reference Material (SRM) has been prepared for ceramic fracture toughness. It is the first reference material in the world for the property fracture toughness for any class material (metal, ceramic, polymer). The SRM may be used with any credible fracture toughness test method, but has been optimized for those which use beams in bending. The SRM will complement the new American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard Test Method PS 070-97 as well as two International Standards Organization (ISO) draft standards now under development. This SRM, for which the fracture toughness is known with a high accuracy and precision, should dramatically improve fracture toughness testing and enhance data quality around the world.
