Solid state lighting has the potential to reduce the nation's consumption of lighting energy by half resulting in an annual cost savings of $30 billion and significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Recognizing the importance of SSL to the nation's economy, NIST is working with DOE to support their Energy Star program for SSL by actively participating in development of a series of standards for SSL. These standards detail the color specifications of LED lamps and LED light fixtures; test methods for measuring total light output, energy efficiency, and color quality of SSL products; and nomenclature for LED components and products. A list of the standards for SSL recently published with NIST leadership or active participation is provided below.
NIST's standardization efforts in this area are coordinated with the standardizing bodies and related groups including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), and International Commission on Illumination.
NIST's on-going work includes leadership in developing a new color rendering metric by CIE (TC1-69) and a standard on measurement of high power LEDs from CIE (TC2-63) and IESNA.
