Dissipative Kerr Solitons in a III-V Microresonator

June 22, 2020
Author(s)
Gregory T. Moille, Lin Chang, Weiqiang Xie, Ashutosh S. Rao, Xiyuan Lu, Marcelo I. Davanco, John E. Bowers, Kartik A. Srinivasan
We demonstrate stable microresonator Kerr solitons in a III-V platform through cryogenic quenching of the thermorefractive effect. Such phase-stable operation is critical to fully exploit the high nonlinearity and low loss available in this platform.

The Impossibility of Efficient Quantum Weak Coin-Flipping

June 22, 2020
Author(s)
Carl A. Miller
How can two parties with competing interests carry out a fair coin flip, using only a noiseless quantum channel? This problem (quantum weak coin-flipping) was formalized more than 15 years ago, and, despite some phenomenal theoretical progress, practical

Thermal Decoherence and Laser Cooling of Kerr-microresonator Solitons

June 22, 2020
Author(s)
Tara E. Drake, Jordan Stone, Travis Briles, Scott Papp
Thermal noise is ubiquitous in microscopic systems and high-precision measurements. The control of thermal noise would reveal quantum regimes1 and enable fundamental physics searches2 . Recently, nonlinearity in microresonators has enabled laser devices

HALO - High Amplification Laser-pressure Optic

June 21, 2020
Author(s)
Alexandra B. Artusio-Glimpse, Kyle A. Rogers, Paul A. Williams, John H. Lehman
Efforts are underway at the National Institute of Standards and Technology to drastically reduce the uncertainty of laser power measurements using radiation pressure. The High Amplification Laser-pressure Optic (HALO) system is a cornerstone of this effort

Simultaneous Transmission and Absorption Photometry of particle-laden filters from Wildland Fires during the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP) field campaign

June 20, 2020
Author(s)
Cary Presser, Ashot Nazarian, Duli Chand, Arthur Sedlacek, John Hubbe
Transmissivity and absorptivity measurements were carried out simultaneously in the visible (wavelength of 532 nm) at laboratory conditions using particle-laden filters obtained from a three-wavelength particle/soot absorption photometer (PSAP). The

A crowdsourced set of curated structural variants for the human genome

June 19, 2020
Author(s)
Lesley M. Chapman, Noah Spies, Patrick Pai, Andrew Carroll, Marc L. Salit, Justin M. Zook
A high quality benchmark for small variants encompassing 88 to 90% of the reference genome has been developed for seven Genome in a Bottle (GIAB) reference samples. However a reliable benchmark for large indels and structural variants (SVs) is more

Dual-comb photoacoustic spectroscopy

June 19, 2020
Author(s)
Jacob T. Friedlein, Esther Baumann, Kimberly Briggman, Gabriel M. Colacion, Fabrizio R. Giorgetta, Daniel I. Herman, Nathan R. Newbury, Jeeseong Hwang, Ian R. Coddington, Kevin C. Cossel, Gabriel Ycas, Christopher Yung, Eli V. Hoenig, Edgar F. Perez, Aaron Goldfain
Spectrally-resolved photoacoustic imaging is a promising technique for label-free imaging in optically scattering materials. However, this technique often requires acquisition of a separate image at each wavelength of interest. This reduces imaging speeds

Efficient hybrid mixed-ion perovskite photovoltaics: in situ diagnostics of the roles of cesium and potassium alkali cation addition

June 19, 2020
Author(s)
Ming Chun Tang, Yuanyuan Fan, Dounya Barrit, Ruipeng Li, Hoang X. Dang, Siyuan Zhang, Timothy J. Magnanelli, Nhan V. Nguyen, Edwin J. Heilweil, Christina A. Hacker, Detlet-M Smilgies, Kui Zhao, Aram Amassian, Thomas D. Anthopoulos
Perovskite photovoltaics have made extraordinary progress in efficiency and stability in the past few years owing to process and formulation developments like antisolvent drip and mixed-cation mixed-halide compositions. Perovskite solar cells performance

Production Method for Machine-Readable Manufacturing Data Standards

June 19, 2020
Author(s)
Tim Shinbara, Russell Waddell, Moneer Helu
Standards to represent and manage manufacturing data are proliferating as industry rapidly digitizes. The existing global standards development paradigm for manufacturing data needs to shift to digital tools and workflows that produce machine-readable

Big Data Analytics for Smart Factories of the Future

June 18, 2020
Author(s)
Robert Gao, Lihui Wang, Moneer Helu, Roberto Teti
Continued advancement of sensors has led to an ever-increasing amount of data of various physical nature to be acquired from production lines. As rich information relevant to the machines and processes are embedded within these "big data," how to

Compact 1.7 K Cryocooler for Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors

June 18, 2020
Author(s)
Vincent Y. Kotsubo, Joel N. Ullom, Sae Woo Nam
State-of-the-art superconductor-based cryogenic detector systems are being installed at numerous research facilities worldwide and are achieving world-record sensitivities in a variety of applications. Implementation has been greatly facilitated by closed

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Stoichiometric CeAuBi 2

June 18, 2020
Author(s)
M. M. Piva, R. Tartaglia, G. S. Freitas, J. C. Souza, D. S. Christovam, S. M. Thomas, Juscelino Leao, William D. Ratcliff, Jeffrey W. Lynn, C. Lane, J.-X Zhu, J. D. Thompson, P. F. S. Rosa, C. Adriano, E. Granado, P. G. Pagliuso
We report the electronic and magnetic properties of stoichiometric CeAuBi 2 single crystals. At ambient pressure, CeAuBi 2 orders antiferromagnetically below a Neel temperature (T N ) of 19 K. Neutron diffraction experiments revealed an antiferromagnetic
