Biometric technology is integral to the nation and its impact will only increase as needs and capabilities evolve over time. The Image Group develops standards, measurement methods and best practices for biometric technologies. Working closely with government, law enforcement, industry and academia, we promote accuracy and interoperability, while fully supporting the biometrics community.
Our biometric programs focus on supporting the governmentwide effort to increase the collection of superior quality biometrics, ensuring the data collected is shareable between agencies and that biometric systems are accurate, fair, and interoperable. As part of this effort, NIST works with other federal government agencies to develop standards for the national and international level, along with testing and evaluating innovative technology. The three pillars of our work in biometrics are fingerprint, iris and face projects.
