Resources for Laboratory Recognition

The OWM Laboratory Metrology Program manages a Laboratory Recognition service that originally began as a congressionally mandated "New State Standards Program" in 1965 as part of its continuing support to the States. This service is designed to provide laboratory recognition according to the technical specifications in NIST Handbook 143, which includes technical and administrative guidance and training, proficiency testing, and assistance to state legal metrology laboratories to ensure accurate and traceable measurements from NIST standards, measurement services, and metrology training to the local jurisdictions. Learn more about this service here.

This page provides a series of resources (listed below) that were primarily developed for state weights and measures programs and state metrology laboratory staff. The technical criteria that are applicable for all state weights and measures laboratories as explicitly referenced in the current version of NIST Handbook 143. Other metrology laboratory users might find these items of interest and are welcome to use and/or modify them for other applications.
